We are pleased to announce that one of our newest faculty members, Dhruv Batra, who recently joined the School of Interactive Computing, is the recipient of the ONR Young Investigator Program (YIP) Award. The ONR YIP is a highly competitive and prestigious award for early-career researchers whose scientific pursuits show outstanding promise for supporting the Department of Defense, while also promoting their professional development.
More information about the ONR YIP is available here:

Dhruv’s proposal addressed a fundamental problem for the future of AI — how can we make AI trustworthy by producing an intelligent system that explain why they are making the predictions they are making? The current generation of AI systems are fundamentally limited by their inability to explain their decisions and actions to human users. This proposed research is developing theory, algorithms, and implementations for deep machine learning models that are able to provide explanations for their predictions, and will study the effect of `transparent’ models and explanations on user trust and perceived trustworthiness.
Please join me in giving Dhruv our warmest congratulations! This award not only is a great honor for Dhruv but it reflects very well on GA Tech as well.
